What is Yoga Therapy?
Although all yoga is potentially therapeutic and healing, Yoga Therapy is the specific application of yogic tools (poses, breathwork, meditation, self-reflection, and more) to address an individual’s physical, mental, and emotional needs.
How is Yoga Therapy different from a Yoga Class?
A general yoga class can ease aches, pains, and mood, but a yoga therapy session goes much further. Yoga therapy is completely tailored to what you need, including working on specific goals while considering any limitations you might have. Yoga therapists have in-depth training to help them assess and keep clients safe. Yoga therapy can complement any additional healthcare you might be receiving.
How is a Yoga Therapist different from a Yoga Teacher?
Being an IAYT-certified Yoga Therapist ensures that a yoga therapist has in-depth training to assess clients properly, as well as keeping them safe, and interacting with other healthcare professionals effectively. Yoga Therapists are required to receive extensive additional training in anatomy, psychology, yoga philosophy, and other therapeutic skills and tools, beyond what yoga teachers are required to receive.
Why does it work?
Yoga has been practiced in some form for millennia, and we are just beginning to understand these mechanisms from a Western scientific perspective.
A tool applied in one area, such as a breathing practice, can profoundly impact a completely different area of the body or mind. Research thinks this works partly because of yoga’s ability to regulate the nervous system and possibly affect the way the brain processes information.
Another reason yoga therapy works so well is that it’s not a treatment “done to” a person; yoga therapists empower their clients to tap into their own innate healing capabilities.
What conditions can Yoga Therapy help?

What level of experience do you need in yoga for yoga therapy?
The practice of yoga is meant for where you are at this time. No previous experience is required. Yoga Therapy can help people who can’t move at all and those who do.
